Under a Starry Sky represents a single moment in time on the earth at night. It shows people engaged in various activities - eating, drinking, fighting, giving birth, dying, watching tv, etc. Only a few figures at the top, looking up at the glorious night sky, are fully aware of their connectedness to the cosmos.
The work was financed by the Chinese government. I did this work and Driving to the Western Paradise at a foundry in the countryside near Shanghai. It took me 3 weeks, working 12 to 18-hour days, to do the clay for the two works. This sculpture is now located at a new art college in Shanghai.
